eligibility
Applications will be accepted from predoctoral and postdoctoral level trainees who meet the following criteria:
- US citizen or permanent residents.
- Individuals who are committed to pursuing a career in non-cancer related KUH research and engage in basic, translational, or clinical research in a NIDDK KUH priority research area. Due to NIH requirements, this program cannot fund research that primarily investigates cancer.
- Trainees must commit full-time effort to their research training with a primary mentor at one of the five Seattle NCOR-KUH partner institutions.*
Predoctoral Trainees Requirements
- Applicant must have received a baccalaureate degree and be enrolled in a program leading to an MD, PhD, or an equivalent research doctoral degree program at one of the five Seattle NCOR-KUH partner institutions.
- Applicant must be in good academic standing and have the approval of their program to enroll in this TL1 program.
Postdoctoral Trainees Requirements
- Applicant must have received, as of the beginning date of the TL1 appointment, a PhD, MD, or comparable doctoral degree from an accredited domestic or foreign institution. Comparable doctoral degrees include, but are not limited to, the following: D.D.S., D.M.D., D.C., D.O., D.V.M., O.D.,D. P.M., Sc.D., Eng.D., Dr.PH., D.N.Sc., D.P.T., Pharm.D., N.D. (Doctor of Naturopathy), D.S.W., Psy.D., as well as a doctoral degree in nursing research.
- Applicants enrolled in an adult or pediatric residency or fellowship training program at the UW and plans to conduct KUH-oriented research with a faculty mentor in this Training Program.
Mentor Requirements
- Mentors must have mentoring experience and infrastructure to support the applicant’s research project. (co-mentors should be added if needed to meet this requirement.)
- Mentors must have R-level (or equivalent) active funding (co-mentors should be added if needed to meet this requirement).
*Note: If the proposed faculty mentor is not currently in this Training Program, the applicant may still be eligible. Faculty members whose research fits under the NIDDK KUH umbrella, please email the Program Manager, Genevieve McCarthy, at gcm11@uw.edu with a brief description of your research.

- One Letter of Support from Mentor(s) / Mentorship Team; multiple mentors may sign (limit 2 pages)
- List of current sources of grant funding (please include co-mentor funding if a co-mentor will be included to fulfill the mentor funding requirement).
