Call for applications

Applications are now open for both predoctoral and postdoctoral positions in the NCOR-KUH TL1 Training Program.

Appointments are available for start dates in July 2027 and October 2027. Selected candidates will be interviewed in February 2027, with funding decisions anticipated by March 2027.

eligibility

Applications will be accepted from predoctoral and postdoctoral level trainees who meet the following criteria:

  • US citizen or permanent residents.
  • Individuals who are committed to pursuing a career in non-cancer related KUH research and engage in basic, translational, or clinical research in a NIDDK KUH priority research area. Due to NIH requirements, this program cannot fund research that primarily investigates cancer.
      • If you have questions about whether your project aligns with a NIDDK KUH priority research area, please contact gcm11@uw.edu. We are happy to discuss project fit prior to application submission.
  • Trainees must commit full-time effort to their research training with a primary mentor at one of the five Seattle NCOR-KUH partner institutions: the University of Washington, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Seattle Children’s Hospital, VA Puget Sound Health Care System, and Bloodworks Northwest.*

Predoctoral Trainees Requirements

  • Applicant must have received a baccalaureate degree and be enrolled in a program leading to an MD, PhD, or an equivalent research doctoral degree program at one of the five Seattle NCOR-KUH partner institutions.
  • Applicant must be in good academic standing and have the approval of their program to enroll in this TL1 program.

Postdoctoral Trainees Requirements

  • Applicant must have received, as of the beginning date of the TL1 appointment, a PhD, MD, or comparable doctoral degree from an accredited domestic or foreign institution. Comparable doctoral degrees include, but are not limited to, the following: D.D.S., D.M.D., D.C., D.O., D.V.M., O.D.,D.    P.M., Sc.D., Eng.D., Dr.PH., D.N.Sc., D.P.T., Pharm.D., N.D. (Doctor of Naturopathy), D.S.W., Psy.D., as well as a doctoral degree in nursing research.
  • Applicants enrolled in an adult or pediatric residency or fellowship training program at the UW and plans to conduct KUH-oriented research with a faculty mentor in this Training Program.

Mentor Requirements

  • Mentors must have mentoring experience and infrastructure to support the applicant’s research project.
    • Co-mentors should be added if needed to meet this requirement.
  • Mentors must have R-level (or equivalent) active funding (co-mentors should be added if needed to meet this requirement).
  • If a mentor has more than one mentee applying, they must briefly describe in their Letter of Support how each trainee’s project is distinct and independently driven.

*Note: If the proposed faculty mentor is not currently in this Training Program, the applicant may still be eligible. Faculty members whose research fits under the NIDDK KUH umbrella, please email the Program Manager, Genevieve Jordahl, at gcm11@uw.edu with a brief description of your research.

TL1 Funding and Benefits

The NCOR-KUH TL1 program provides the following support to appointed trainees:

  • A stipend based on your current NRSA training year level. The stipend is based on NRSA guidelines (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-25-105.html).
  • If a trainee's institutional salary exceeds the NRSA stipend level, the mentor and/or home department is responsible for covering the difference.
    • Postdoc compensation can vary by program. Please contact your department's HR team to review the minimum salary for each position and ensure you have funds to support the difference between this rate, the NRSA stipend amounts, and fringe benefits overage.
  • $1,000 per year to use toward travel or other research-related expenses.
  • Tuition support. Predoctoral trainees receive 60% support, up to $16,000 per year, of their actual program costs. Postdoctoral trainees receive $4,500 towards tuition.
  • Childcare costs. Each full-time trainee is eligible to receive $3,000 for childcare costs, if applicable. 
  • An allotment for fringe benefits, including health insurance, is also provided. Any costs exceeding the support provided by the award are the responsibility of the mentor and/or home department.
    • Based on current UW fringe rates, the estimated shortfall is approximately $3,472 for predoctoral trainees.
    • For postdoctoral trainees, the shortfall will vary by PGY level; as an example, the estimated shortfall for a PGY-4 postdoctoral trainee is approximately $9,253.
    • These amounts are subject to change, as UW fringe benefit rates are updated annually at the beginning of each academic and fiscal year.

  3. Personal Statement (limit 1/2 page to 1 page)
  4. Research Plan (paragraph limit 500 words, excluding references or figures)
  5. Training Plan (limit ½ page to 1 page)
  6. Graduate transcripts for pre-doc applicants and PhD track postdocs.

Part II- Mentor or Mentorship Team

  1. NIH Biosketch of primary mentor (no specified format)
  2. One Letter of Support from Mentor(s) / Mentorship Team; multiple mentors may sign (limit 2 pages) 
  3. List of current sources of grant funding (please include co-mentor funding if a co-mentor will be included to fulfill the mentor funding requirement).
